The Tennessee Amateur Radio Association (TARA) offers several membership levels, each priced to cover the organization's operational costs. No one at TARA receives compensation for their work; our mission is to enhance the amateur radio hobby, not profit from it.

Here's a breakdown of each membership level:

  • Associate Membership ($0): This free membership provides access to meetings, events, members-only groups, and a resource pages.

  • Support Membership ($6): For a minimal fee, support members gain access to in-person and remote programs, a yearly membership certificate, discounted testing, and eligibility for prizes and rewards.

  • Full Membership ($12): This premium membership includes all the benefits of the Associate and Support levels, plus voting privileges, eligibility for office and committee positions, membership awards, free testing, and email forwarding.

Your membership dues directly support TARA's various initiatives designed to promote and grow amateur radio in Tennessee:

  • TN Youth on the Air: This initiative focuses on expanding interest in amateur radio among young people by reaching out to BSA troops and assisting in the creation of school clubs. Through our ARRL VE partnership, we offer low-cost testing for individuals under 18, along with reimbursement for licensing fees.

  • TN Parks on the Air: TARA is developing a partnership with Tennessee State Parks. This will provide TARA members and affiliate clubs with opportunities to demonstrate amateur radio in natural settings, answer questions, and engage more people with the hobby outdoors.

  • TARA VE Team: We've established our own Volunteer Examiner (VE) team to simplify the process of entering and advancing in the amateur radio hobby. Full members receive one free testing session or upgrade per year as part of their membership. These sessions are open to everyone, not just residents of Tennessee.

  • TN Club Finder: Recognizing that clubs are the backbone of the hobby, TN Club Finder, once funded, will be a readily available resource for hams to find up-to-date information on clubs in one centralized location. This will prevent outdated or incorrect information regarding club repeaters, events, and meetings.

  • Club and Member Awards: TARA will honor achievements within the amateur radio community through awards such as "Club of the Year" and "Most Active Member of the Year." We will also have an award created and voted on by the membership.

These initiatives, along with many others, are made possible through membership dues. Your contributions will also help us finalize our 501(c)(3) status; we are already recognized as a nonprofit corporation within the state. We encourage you to become a member, regardless of the level you choose. Our goal is to help Tennessee hams stay "radio active" and expand the hobby across the state.
